The World Health Organization (WHO) and scientific evidence confirm that medical abortion is safe, even when it is self-managed or performed at home before the 13th week of gestation (12 weeks and 6 days). Thus, abortion can be performed safely and effectively as long as there is access to accurate information, quality-assured medications and, if necessary, access to health services.
This document focuses on situations that do not contraindicate medical abortion, but require special attention. These are characteristics of the individual that may require a particular approach.
