Formally, in 2023 Ipas LAC consolidates its area of technological innovation in communication for safe abortion, as part of the strategic communication unit; however, its background dates back 10 years, when Ipas LAC began experimenting with technological innovation processes, methodologies for the development of information systems and interaction design for safe abortion communication, launching its first e-learning platform, the first interactive tools and an app for health professionals.

This area also provides technical advice and provides examples of documentation, technological communication and information management methodologies so that other organizations can be inspired and develop their own safe abortion support tools.

BENEFITS OF ONLINE ACCESS

All the platforms of the technological innovation unit are free and open access, and most of them can be used anonymously. The platforms that require data for their use, such as those linked to courses and training, protect the personal data of users in accordance with the highest standards.

The confidentiality and security of personal data is paramount to Ipas LAC because we know that some women and other gestations, activists, escorts and health-care providers manage and accompany abortions in contexts of criminalization and stigma.

eXPERIENCE RECORDED

Searching for health topics online is becoming increasingly common among people in Latin America. As part of a research study led by Ipas in 2022, people were asked: How often do you search for health topics on the Internet? In response to this question, 40% of Mexicans surveyed said they do so on an annual basis, while 26% do so monthly. 40% search for health topics online and 18% do so through social networks.

A significant part of the population is resolving their reproductive health information needs from virtual spaces, which are seen as safe and stigma-free spaces. In this context, it is essential to make available evidence-based information and tools that help the exercise of reproductive rights.

We present the tools we have created for women and other people with gestational capacity, activists, companions, health care providers and health personnel in the Latin American region.

I don’t know whether to abort or not

Campaign regional campaign that sought to detonate a broad conversation in the virtual space about safe abortion. Es the result of a partnership between Ipas LAC and Sarape Group, which was joined by 90 experts, 16 organizations cohosts and more than 160 participating organizations from 13 countriescountries in the the region in the longest safe abortion livestream in history, where all questions about abortion were answered.

Today, you can relive the livestream and find answers to the nearly 400 safe abortion questions received as part of the campaign.

Listed as the Spanish-language video with the most views on YouTube when searching for the word “abortion”. It has been used by the population in almost all Latin American countries.

With more than 50 thousand messages in the comments, it has become a great forum where questions are posted, answers are offered, accompaniment is provided, experiences are shared, support and various types of counseling are given.

Interactive map of abortion in Latin America

Interactive map where you will find legal and regulatory information on abortion in all Latin American countries, how to access a procedure in those countries and information on organizations that provide support from the territory.

The map has counted with the collaboration of 56 organizations in the region that have decided to be referred as allies that can offer support to people who need more information about abortion in their territory.

Abortion questions chatbot with Sofia

Sofía, our first virtual assistant, offers information in Spanish generated from the information needs of women and others with gestational capacity. It contains information on safe abortion, contraception and prevention of unplanned and/or unwanted pregnancies.

By allowing anonymous and confidential conversations, users of this resource tell us that one of the main advantages they see is the possibility of avoiding conversation with a person; specifically, they can avoid being scolded, judged or criminalized.

Sexual violence and safe abortion chatbot for migrants, Te acompaño

You will find information on access to reproductive health services for people in the context of migration. It links different support tools, such as maps with points where people can request support.

Technological innovation that provides automated conversations to expand access to safe abortion along major migration routes in Mexico.

Legal Abortion Microsites

Web pages with information on access to abortion in the states of Mexico where it is more permissible. You will find the situations in which a legal abortion can be accessed; the safe methods to perform the procedure, including self-management and network accompaniment; as well as the reference to clinics where the service can be requested.

Virtual classroom for personnel involved in the provision of reproductive health services.

Free space to facilitate virtual training for multidisciplinary personnel working in sexual and reproductive health services in Latin America. It offers the possibility of capacity building for workers directly and indirectly involved in sexual and reproductive health care.

Aiming at the democratization of information and with a human rights approach, within the virtual classroom people have the power to self-manage their learning with courses on clinical updates, legal and regulatory frameworks, management of the medical supply chain and registration of procedures.

Platform for health professionals

Since 2019, the platform for health professionals, has been a reference space for health services personnel committed to the health of women and others with gestational capacity.

We share clinical guidelines and protocols, regulatory frameworks and relevant information applicable to public health services and offer tools that facilitate the provision of quality health services, as well as materials to reduce stigma. On this platform, health care providers interested in offering safe abortion services can register to access exclusive content and receive information on an ongoing basis.
