data-contrast=\"auto\">Following a six-year update process led by the Ministry of Health through the National Center for Gender Equity, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Mexico now has a new NOM-005-SSA-2025 that redefines the standard for the provision of contraception and family planning services in the country.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new version of the regulation, published today in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dof.gob.mx\/nota_detalle.php?codigo=5790446&#038;fecha=12\/06\/2026#gsc.tab=0\">Official Gazette of the Federation<\/a>, incorporates the latest scientific evidence, recommendations from the World Health Organization, and a sexual and reproductive rights-based approach that clearly outlines how these services should be provided in all health facilities across the country.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having a standard of this kind is essential because it establishes the mandatory criteria that all healthcare facilities and staff must meet, not only in technical terms but also in legal terms:  <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Clear and sufficient information for decision-making.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Appropriate guidance during care.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Informed and revocable consent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Strict confidentiality.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Free access to contraceptives.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Actual availability of methods at health care facilities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Access to contraception following an obstetric event (childbirth, cesarean section, or abortion).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIpas LAC participated in the revision process as an expert organization in sexual and reproductive health, providing clinical and legal input that strengthened the rights-based and autonomy-focused approach in the final text\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">said Marisol Escudero Mart\u00ednez, deputy director of Advocacy at Ipas Latin America and the Caribbean.  <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Significant changes from the previous version:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It focuses on the independence of the users.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It establishes clear requirements for providing information and confidential care to adolescents, tailored to their age and circumstances.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It incorporates standards for inclusive care and information for people with disabilities and those in vulnerable situations.  <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It reduces the discretion of healthcare personnel by establishing clear obligations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":6,\"335551620\":6,\"335559740\":276}\"> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to Mara Zaragoza, Deputy Director of Capacity Building at Ipas LAC, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cthis update provides clear, up-to-date guidelines for health care providers to deliver contraceptive services based on scientific evidence and respect for people\u2019s sexual and reproductive rights.
