Some people walk past the murals and keep going. Others stop, take pictures of them, read the message, or talk about what they see. These are different ways of encountering a reflection that, by stepping outside the usual spaces for discussion about abortion, also finds its way into everyday life. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n The murals are part of #DecidirSinMiedo, an art project by Ipas Latin America and the Caribbean (Ipas LAC) and the collective project Vulv\u00edsima, which aims to bring a conversation about safe abortion, reproductive autonomy, and the right to care into public spaces in Mexico City.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_code][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/ipaslac.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/55576203230_f429ba02cc_c.jpg” title_text=”55576203230_f429ba02cc_c” _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” custom_padding=”24px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n The walls became a starting point for conversations that went beyond the images and focused on the experiences, questions, and perspectives of those who encountered them.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n Once the murals were finished, we asked some local residents what the murals meant to them. Here\u2019s what they shared with us. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n Damaris, a psychology student, spoke about how little people\u2019s voices are heard on these issues: schools teach a lot about birth control methods, but very little about the experiences of those who seek them or those who need an abortion. For her, it\u2019s not enough to approach the issue solely from a medical perspective, because behind it all are people and collective beliefs rooted in stigma. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n “<\/span>I think it’s very important for us to claim the spaces that have often been denied to us. I think it’s very important to have a place where you can talk with your friends about your experiences\u2014about how you navigate such natural parts of life as taking care of yourself or making decisions about your own body. <\/span><\/b>“, Damaris, a psychology student.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.27.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_code][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.9″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Balam sees something in the mural that interacts with the space.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n “<\/span>Mali\u2019s style\u2014the mural artist\u2014is very colorful and fits perfectly with life here. (\u2026) I remember how sexual health was such a taboo subject when we were in school, and I\u2019d like to think that things have changed a lot. I think this project can really capture that generational shift: that it\u2019s no longer such a taboo, and that people aren\u2019t living in ignorance because they know nothing about sexual health. <\/span><\/b>“, Balam, a local resident.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Marian spoke about self-care as an everyday practice that goes beyond rest and nutrition.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n “<\/span>For me, self-care goes hand in hand with being mindful of myself and my body: listening to it, paying attention to what\u2019s going on. It also means exploring my mind, recognizing the emotions and thoughts that are there, and showing compassion and patience toward myself.
