At lpas LAC, we work with a clear and determined focus: to ensure that everyone who needs contraception or access to safe abortion can obtain it in dignity and without barriers.
We design our programs based on their needs, aware that gender, race and class inequalities hinder access to essential services in the region.
In Central America, five countries prohibit abortion in all its forms, exposing women and girls to severe risks. This criminalization perpetuates a human rights crisis, leaving millions without safe options.
Every year, 4.4 million unsafe abortions occur in Latin America, contributing to 17% of maternal deaths (WHO, 2023). In the face of this reality, we fight to break down the barriers that impede access to essential health services, ensuring that reproductive autonomy is a reality for all.

At Ipas LAC we weave alliances and work to guarantee the reproductive rights of women and people with gestational capacity, as well as to strengthen access to abortion in Latin America through health services, support networks and self-management of the procedure.
Pathways to safe abortion
At Ipas LAC, we recognize that there are a variety of avenues through which women and people of childbearing capacity can access safe abortion and exercise their right to reproductive freedom, self-determination and choice. Strengthening these options is key to ensuring that all people can make informed decisions and access safe services.
Some of these pathways include:
- Self-use of medications, which recognizes the capacity, agency and autonomy of individuals to manage their own abortion process with reliable information.
- Support networks, which value sisterhood and support among people organized to provide information, supplies and emotional support, and an accompanied experience of abortion.
- Pharmacies, which play a key role in the accessibility of medicines and information on medical abortion.
- Civil society organizations that promote community work to raise awareness, demystify and promote knowledge about sexual and reproductive rights.
- Health services that offer abortion care in conditions of quality, safety and respect for adult women and other pregnant women, with guaranteed privacy and confidentiality.
Recognizing and strengthening these avenues is key to ensuring that the right to safe abortion is a reality accessible to all who need it.

Best Practice Centers
Good Practice Centers are a key strategy to ensure access to quality reproductive health services in the region. They offer safe abortion and high-quality contraception, and also function as training spaces for multidisciplinary teams. With comprehensive, human rights-based care, free of discrimination, CBPs contribute to reducing mortality from unsafe abortion.
Working with Civil Society Organizations
Civil society organizations (CSOs) are essential allies in the defense of reproductive rights.
At Ipas LAC, we work closely with them, based on the principles of mutual respect, collective empowerment and solidarity, to strengthen access to safe abortion care and contraception.
Expanding access to abortion along Mexico's main migration routes
Migrants in Mexico face multiple barriers, including violence and discrimination, as well as widespread ignorance of their rights, such as access to safe abortion care. At Ipas LAC, we work to expand access to these vital services along migration routes, offering comprehensive support to this group.

At Ipas LAC, we leverage technological innovation to open new pathways to safe abortion. Our technical expertise allows us to use digital tools and platforms to improve access, information and quality of reproductive services in the region.

With this amount, we could cover an entire month of internet access for a shelter, which will allow people to access Ipas LAC’s digital tools and obtain information in case of sexual violence and information about safe abortion, such as the Te Acompaño chatbot or the accompaniment maps and misoprostol sales points.
With this amount we are able to fund the development of a new resource that addresses the specific health needs of women and people with childbearing capacity in the context of migration.
A great support with which we can cover the formation of an organization in the territory and improve the attention to the reproductive health needs of migrants.
A donation that covers an entire month of the operating costs of “Te acompaño”, the sexual violence and safe abortion chatbot, ensuring its availability to the people who need it most.
