We celebrate the strength and efforts of the organizations, collectives, social movements, and individuals who defend democracy and human rights in Brazil

October 26, 2026. At Ipas Latin America and the Caribbean (Ipas LAC), we recognize the work of civil society organizations, collectives, social movements, health care workers, and all those who work to ensure sexual and reproductive rights in Brazil. Their experience, organization, and capacity for mobilization and advocacy have been—and will continue to be—fundamental to democracy, the defense of civic space, and the promotion of human rights.

A democracy requires institutions that respond to the needs of the population, public policies guided by human rights and scientific evidence, and conditions that allow civil society organizations to participate freely in decisions that affect their lives.

These commitments are essential in Brazil and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. In the region, economic conditions, gender and racial inequalities, violence, and institutional barriers continue to limit the exercise of rights and access to health services. Moving toward reproductive justice requires addressing these inequalities and ensuring that all people can make free and informed decisions about their reproductive lives.

In Brazil, the campaign Criança Não É Mãe, comprising 35 organizations, entities, and social movements, promotes measures to protect the rights of girls and adolescents. Among its priorities are preventing sexual abuse and exploitation, combating child marriage and pregnancy among children and adolescents, strengthening protection policies, and ensuring timely, comprehensive, and humane access to legal abortion for girls and adolescents who are victims of sexual violence.

This initiative requires concrete action by the government to guarantee the rights recognized by law. Girls and adolescents who are victims of sexual violence must have access to legal abortion without delays or barriers that exacerbate the harm they have suffered. Strengthening violence prevention, ensuring adequate health services, and eliminating institutional barriers are public responsibilities that require political will, resources, and effective implementation mechanisms.

At Ipas LAC, we reaffirm that citizen participation, the defense of civic space, and the conditions necessary for the effective exercise of rights are fundamental to building more just and equitable societies. Strengthening democracy requires upholding these principles in public decision-making and ensuring that sexual and reproductive rights are part of this agenda.

In Brazil and throughout the region, there are still actors and agendas that seek to restrict sexual and reproductive rights and gender equality. In this context, guaranteeing these rights is a fundamental part of a democracy that respects human rights. We invite you to read and share the campaign’s pledge letter Criança Não É Mãe and to join regional efforts so that recognized rights translate into accessible health services and timely care.
